Why rugs are an essential design addition

Like a piece of art, a rug can anchor a space, add texture and warmth and express creativity. Need further convincing? Here are 7 reasons why you should embrace a rug… (not literally…. or literally if you like!)

1.  Comfort

If you have wooden or tiled floors (and let’s face it, you live in the UK!) walking on them can be sometimes uncomfortable and super cold underfoot. A cosy rug can quickly transform hard and cold floors and save your tootsies from the cold.

2.  Sound soaker-upper

One of the biggest practical benefits of rugs is that they can absorb sound. If you have a large room or open space which is echoey, a thick, plush rug will soak up the sound.

3.  Warm it Up

Rugs can be saviours for insulation. Save some money on your heating bills by putting down dense area rugs in each room. (Top Tip: for extra warmth add in an insulated rug pad underneath)

4.  Brighten

If your room does not have much natural light and is especially dark, a light coloured rug will illuminate the area.

Furthermore, if you have a dark décor, the right coloured rug will offer an accent, the rug does not have to be bright white to add light, neutral tones and pale shades can work as well.

5. Connection

Rugs can connect separate spaces; you can make your design more cohesive by incorporating different types of rugs that share a central design or colour scheme. Rugs are great at creating unity and a visual connection in large open spaces.

6. Zoning

An area rug is perfect for zoning spaces, whether you are looking to connect or disconnect a space. Use big rugs to anchor furniture and set clear boundaries for transforming one big room into distinct living areas.

Experiment with circles, ovals and squares – remember - not all rugs need to be rectangular!

7.  Time for Texture

The best designed rooms have textural detail and a rug can certainly help with this. Use different types of rugs with interesting textures to bring depth and contrast to your space. Try faux sheepskin, mohair, chunky knit, you get the idea.
